When your gums and jawbone are damaged by infection, deep pockets develop, providing a comfortable “home” for bacteria. The usual treatment in this case is scaling and root planing. If the pockets are too deep, though, we will not be able to remove these bacteria through deep cleaning.
Flap surgery allows us to get deep beneath the gums to get rid of the bacteria creating the infection. Once the procedure is complete, your gums will fit tighter around your teeth, reducing pocket size and helping to prevent reinfection.
Your comfort is important to us, and we’ll take the time to make sure that you are completely numb before we begin your treatment. Following your procedure, Dr. Copulos will give you self-care instructions to help you heal with minimal discomfort or complication.
Periodontitis is a condition that needs to be taken seriously.
