Periodontal disease is a chronic infection caused by bacteria below your gumline. Left unchecked, these bacteria can cause considerable damage to your gum tissue, the bone beneath, and the other structures that hold your teeth in place. To successfully treat periodontitis, these bacteria must be eliminated.
One of the ways we do this is this is through a deep cleaning procedure known as scaling and root planing. During this procedure, we use specialized instruments to remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gumline and then smooth out the surface of the root, making it more difficult for bacteria to take hold. This helps reduce the gum inflammation so that the pockets around your teeth tighten up, making reinfection less likely.
Your comfort is important to us, and we will make sure that you are numb before we perform this treatment. A full deep clean may take more than one appointment, and we will discuss this with you so you know what to expect.
Whenever possible, we prefer to use conservative treatments. Scaling and root planing is less invasive than other treatment options we offer, and it’s also highly effective. In fact, it’s often the first step in the plan to treat periodontitis. Controlling the bacteria and slowing the progression of your condition is our top priorities for successful treatment.
